On dropbox and love

Mr. M. And me share a little notebook computer. We take it to conferences and events, and I take it to the office. The deal is not exactly 50/50. I have a shy lonely folder called “Maria” which is my virtual Narnia. He’s furnished the machine with ubuntu and a dreadful ant screen saver. But that’s ok. There’s this box-shaped icon on the top bar of the desktop that represents dropbox. In the unlikely case you haven’t heard of dropbox, I’ll inform you it’s a huge folder held somewhere in the web so that you can access it anywhere, and it also allows you to create a link for a file in order to share it. It’s rather brilliant. Well, the dropbox linked to this notebook obviously syncs with Mr. M.’s account. This means that as I work in the computer little messages pop up: eu-draft-dec has been updated. Or stuff like this. Pretty boring, really. But it has become such a nice reminder that he is out there, in another office, doing his things all the time. It is so much more suttle and unintended than the emails we share throughout the day, and that’s what’s lovely about it. It’s like having him in the background constantly. Who would have said that dropbox would be my love dove in this digital era. But it is.
